Water Removal Due to a Flood

We have all seen photos of flooding and heard reports of how high the flood waters have reached in the past.  Maybe, you have experienced a flood in your own home.  Floods can occur anywhere at almost any time so we all must be prepared to act quickly.  Of course, the first matter you must deal with when faced with a flood is to protect your family and loved ones but once the flood waters subside, you need to start dealing with the water that remains in your home.

It does not matter how much water has invaded your home, once the flood is over you need to get the water out of your home.  Allowing flood waters to sit inside your house will not only cause more damage to your house, the water will create a health hazard as well.  Flood waters can carry a lot of unhealthy debris in to your home, so always wear gloves and protective clothing when working on water removal and flood cleanup projects.

Start your water removal project by inspecting the damage to your home.  Look at each room of your home that has been affected by the flood and try to determine the amount of water that you need to remove.  Look for pools of water in closets and in cabinets as well as on the visible floor.  Your carpeting will hold a considerable amount of water, in fact, your carpet may be holding so much water that it is safer to remove and re-carpet your home instead of trying to remove the water.

Once you have a good idea on the amount of water in your home, you can begin the process of water removal.  For small areas you may find that towels and a shop vac are the easiest and most effective tools for water removal.  For larger areas such as your kitchen or living room may require a separate pumping system.  If you find yourself using a pump make sure the water is pumped away from your home instead of being emptied into buckets.

After you have pumped all the water out of your home, your water removal tasks have just started.  You now need to concentrate on water removal techniques that will remove all the non-visible moisture from the area.  It is important to focus on water removal until the area is completely dry.  If you skip this step and expect that any additional water will dry naturally, you could be creating a new home for mold and mildew.  You should start by opening all the windows and utilizing fans or heating equipment to dry the area.

Living through a flood can be very traumatic and once the ordeal is over, your work is only about to begin.  Repairing your home after a flood can be a very difficult and time consuming process.  It is important to not skip any steps in the water removal or cleanup process.  Your health and the health of everyone who enters your home could be affected if you do not properly complete all water removal tasks after the flood.
